Sandbags are used whenever you need extra weight to prevent tipping. You usually "bag" stands, especially when the weight is off center or the center of balance is higher than normal (such as lighting trees extended near their maximum height). Sandbags also help stabilize equipment in windy situations and can counterbalance certain boom arm applications.
